I speak up! When I hear or read something offensive, I call out as soon as I can — I don’t my silence to be misconstrued as agreement, compliance, or endorsement of ugly ideas. Before I would have laughed awkwardly and removed myself from the conversation.. but that made me compliant in racism now I speak out. I dont just speak.. I yell. I absolutely speak up and so has my husband. We don’t live and think like that. I’ll never hesitate to speak truth to racism and bigotry. I will never tolerate that ever. I think most of us American caucasians have a racist streak. I was raised to be virulently racist and I deal with it everyday. I was recently visiting the Library of Congress in DC. Out of the corner of my eye I saw (though didn’t hear) a young white teenager in a MAGA hat say something to a brown adult man (perhaps middle eastern). I was so appalled, I just reacted. I asked the kid if he had said something inappropriate to the gentleman. He said ‘yes ma’am’. i said he needed to apologize. He said im sorry ma’am. I said not to me you need to apologize to that gentleman. Which he did. And the guy nodded and moved on. But I was so angry, I proceeded to scold him for 5 min. And told security. It was 9/11 no less. And these kids are in DC supposedly to learn something. IMO the permission Trump allows is so wrong.
