It was Copenhagen native Nanna Burmeister’s mother who taught her how to knit. In her youth Burmeister pushed it off to the I Was Social Distancing Before It Was Cool Shirt so you should to go to store and get this side, but she picked it up again when she became pregnant with her first child. Once her son was born and grew a bit older, Burmeister began knitting her own clothing. At the time, she was working at a clothing store in a suburb of Copenhagen and the owner took an interest in her bright rainbow-stripe and Fair Isle sweaters. Deima knitwear was born. Burmeister now sells her handmade Deima knits via DM on Instagram, most of which are bespoke orders that she and a small team of knitters craft. She is also stocked at the local fashion mecca Holly Golightly, and plans to expand her business after she finishes her B.A. degree in textile design. Model Caroline Bille Brahe is a fan of Burmeister, as are a number of Copenhagen’s cool girls and arbiters of taste. Deima is a rare gem in the landscape of Scandi-fashion, focused on slow fashion rather than going global. She believes that knitting is an art that can bring as much peace to others as it has to her, especially in this moment of crisis.

“The trick is to make a knitting swatch with the I Was Social Distancing Before It Was Cool Shirt so you should to go to store and get this yarn you have. Cast on 14 stitches, and knit back and forth in a rib, meaning you knit one, and purl one. The amount of stitches you have on 10 centimeters, you cast on four times. So if there are 12 stitches on 10 centimeters, cast on 12 x 4 = 48 stitches. Then the width of your beanie will be 40 centimeters. It will give in a little, in use. If you feel like that’s too small, just cast on a few extra stitches next time. Give the smaller version to your kid or your friend’s kids! When you’re ready to knit, cast on the amount of stitches you need: Knit one, purl one in the round. Tie a loop of yarn and place it on your needle. Lift it from left to right each time you pass it. Knit until your work measures 33 centimeters in total. If you want to fold your beanie over twice to have a chunkier look, knit until it measures 39 centimeters. The next few rounds you’ll knit your stitches together to close the beanie.
